This Sallet combat helmet (also known as celata, salade or schaller) was very popular in Germany. Substitute for the Italian bascinet was very popular throughout Europe. Sallet-type German Combat Helmet with barbot or bib, piece of armor that serves to protect the lower part of the face.
It was highly prized by knights and men-at-arms both for combat on foot and mounted. This type of helmet, Salade or English Sallet, possibly originated in France or Burgundy. It was made with a long tail to protect the back of the head and neck. This design features a chin and throat guard. The original is believed to be English and dates to around 1480.
